Summary
The coronavirus pandemic raised concerns that the suspension of live sports and closure of land-based betting venues would fuel a surge in problem gambling online. Data from the UK Gambling Commission (covering 80% of the online market) confirmed a significant rise in online gambling activity during the first lockdown in 2020, with slots revenue climbing from £169m in April 2020 to £202m by April 2021, while live casino and poker also saw strong growth.
Fears prompted the Commission to tighten safer gambling guidance for operators, and parliamentary groups called cluded in March 2021, with changes expected at year’s end.
